In addition to our adult teacher training programs, Montessori Northwest is a founding partner of Alder Montessori, a high-quality early learning program for children ages 3-5 years-old living in poverty.
Alder Montessori began as a partnership between Montessori Northwest, the Reynolds School District, and Greater Than (formerly I Have a Dream Oregon). The program for pre-school aged children, is located within Alder Elementary School and is free for families living within the Alder enrollment boundaries. By providing tuition-free preschool education, Alder Montessori increases school readiness to reduce the impact of poverty for the children and adults participating in the program.
Now in its fourth year, Alder Montessori serves 40 children in two classrooms. The program is thriving under the administration of Alliance for Equity in Montessori Education (AEME), and in partnership with Greater Than and the Reynolds School District. AEME is a new nonprofit dedicated to increasing access to high-quality Montessori early childhood education for children and families impacted by problems with immigration or socioeconomic status, racial and other inequalities, and facing challenges basic to human rights and dignity.
With Alder Montessori, the partners aim to widen the understanding of Montessori by bringing this revolutionary method of education to more children. Similar Montessori schools around the world have been able to achieve impressive outcomes, including gains in literacy, numeracy, and self-regulation needed for academic and lifetime success from early childhood onwards. These results go hand-in-hand with the work of our partners to empower students from low-income communities to thrive in school, college, and career.
MNW is currently fundraising on Facebook to purchase new rain boots for the children at Alder Montessori. You can contribute to this effort by going to the Facebook fundraiser here. Only Facebook members may donate through the link. If you would like to donate to fund boots for Alder but are not on Facebook, please email Emily.
